California Home Insurance: Part 3 Homeowners Optional Coverages
7/31/2011 1:30:00 PM
A standard California Home Insurance policy covers personal property, but with limitations. Personal property is only covered for the perils named, and on an actual cash-value basis. You have other coverages available that can provide additional protection while also making it easier for you in the case of a loss. These additional coverages typically cost just a small percentage of your overall premium, while adding key enhancements and great value.
Personal property replacement cost coverage is a great add-on to your policy in order to have provide you with coverage to replace a lost or damaged item with an identical item without deducting from it’s value for depreciation. Electronic items and other generally depreciate quickly, leaving the standard insurance coverage on an item substantially less than what would be required to replace it. This coverage will greatly benefit your need to purchase a replacement. For example, without this coverage, the loss of an older computer would only be compensated for the actual cash value (depreciated) of the computer, which would likely only be a fraction of the cost to replace the item. With this coverage, your item would be replaced, returning you to a pre-loss condition more quickly, greatly improving your experience.
Special personal property coverage allows all personal property losses to be covered, unless specifically excluded in the policy. For example, if a wedding ring goes missing, under the standard California Home Insurance policy, this would not be covered unless it is actually the result of a theft. With special personal property coverage, mysterious disappearance is a covered peril, and the result is the loss would be covered. This optional coverage also provides consistency across your policy, as both personal property and the dwelling are covered for all-perils.
Note: All coverage is subject to provisions, exclusions, conditions and limitations of the applicable insurance policy.
